2/17 NGO


DIALOG>> There are plenty of NGOs to choose from.
 
A: I want to make a donation for the flood victims.
B: Why don’t you?
A: I don’t know who to give it to.
B: There are plenty of NGOs to choose from.
A: Do you know of any good ones?
B: Go online and do a search.
   

RESPONSE>> Talk about what NGOs are and what they do.

NGOs are exactly what the name suggests: non-governmental organizations.

They are groups that aren’t linked with the government in any way.
* be linked with: ~와 연관되다
ex> That singer was linked with that model for quite some time.
ex> I got linked with her at work to work on a project together.

An NGO can be a religious, secular, community, national, or international types of group.
* secular: 비종교적인, 세속적인

They often try to bring relief or raise awareness for various causes.
* bring relief: 구호활동을 하다
ex>  Volunteer groups brought relief for the flood victims.
* raise awareness for: ~에 대한 인식을 높이다.
ex> Let’s work together to raise awareness on animal rights.


There are so many NGOs across the world, all targeting different goals.
ex> Let’s try to target this particular region of the city.


World Vision is one of the largest relief and development organizations in the world.
* relief: 구호
ex> Many organizations try to send relief packages to third world countries.

Doctors Without Borders seeks to place certified doctors in war-torn areas.
* war-torn: 전쟁으로 폐허가 된
ex> Seeing pictures of war-torn areas makes me very sad.

Greenpeace is a well-known international environmental organization.
ex> I want to work for an environmental organization one day.
