10/21 Voice Phishing

DIALOG>> I got a voice phishing call the other day.

I think I got a voice phishing call the other day.

They acted like my bank and said they needed some account information.

I heard so many people have become victims of these scammers though.
* scam: a clever and dishonest plan for making money


RESPONSE>> Tell us about voice phishing.

One thing to be on guard for these days is voice phishing.
* be on guard for: ~에 대해서 경계하다.
ex> Kids should be taught to be on guard for strangers.

Voice phishing is when someone deceives another person over the phone to get personal information.
ex> Never break up with someone over the phone.

This information can be one's bank account information or PIN number.
* PIN (personal identification number): 비밀번호

This personal information allows voice phishers to get a hold of people's money.
* get a hold of: ~을 손에 쥐다, ~와 연락이 닿다.
ex> I've been trying to get a hold of you all day.

These scammers get victims to open up by pretending to be credible sources.
* scammer: 사기꾼
* open up: (입이나 마음을) 열다
ex> You shouldn't pretend to be someone you are not.

They act as if they are credit card companies, banks, or government agencies.
ex> She acts as if she's the queen of the world.

The tactics of these scam artists are evolving every day.
* tactic: 수법, 전술
* scam artist: 사기꾼
* evolve: to develop gradually, especially from a simple to a more complicated form
ex> The system has evolved to be what it is today.

It's important to never give out personal information over the phone.
* give out: ~을 내어 주다, 알려 주다.


@ I just held out as long as I could. 난 그냥 버틸 수 있는 데까지 버텼을 뿐이야.

1. You should be on guard for strangers.
2. Did you manage to get a hold of him?
3. Try to act as if nothing had happened.
4. We are living in an era where social justice system is continuously evolving.
