10/24 Child Discipline

DIALOG>> Do you spank your kids?

Your children are very well-behaved.
ex> It's important to raise your kids to be well-behaved.

What do you do when they get out of line?

They get scolded.

Do you spank your kids sometimes?


RESPONSE>> Talk about Korean ways of child discipline.

Child discipline in Korea is deeply rooted in the culture.
* be deeply rooted in: ~에 깊게 뿌리를 두다, ~에 근간하다.
* discipline: n. 훈육, 징계 v. 훈육하다, 징계하다.
ex> Do you believe in spanking your kids for discipline?

Good manners are taught at a young age.

Children are taught to respect their elders and use honorifics.
* honorific: showing respect for the person you are speaking to, 존댓말
ex> I was taught to finish the food on my plate.

When kids misbehave, parents discipline them.
* misbehave: to behave badly, 버릇없이 굴다.
ex> When a dog misbehaves, you should discipline it.

Methods of discipline vary from family to family.
ex> The taste varies from store to store.

Some parents make their children get down on their knees with their hands raised up.
* get down on one's knees: 무릎을 꿇다.

Others make them write letters of reflection.
*  a letter of reflection: 반성문

Children write about their wrongdoings and promise not to act the same way.
* wrongdoings: illegal or dishonest behaviour

Some parents teach their kids a lesson through corporal punishment.
* corporal punishment: 체벌

Spanking by parents is quite common in Korea.
* spanking: a series of hits on the bottom, given to sb, especially a child, as a punishment
= caning
