10/18 Samulnori

DIALOG>> Samulnori is a unique genre of Korean folk music.

Have you ever seen a samulnori performance?

It's a unique genre of Korean folk music.

There are four percussion instruments in samulnori.

Come to think of it, I think I once saw a performance on the street.

Samulnori is a genre of Korean folk music.

* folk [fóuk] music: 민속 음악

There are four percussion instruments in samulnori.

The 꽹과리(kkwaenggwari) is a small brass gong.
* brass: a bright yellow metal made by mixing copper and zinc. 놋쇠
* gong: 둥근 접시, 둥근 악기, 징

It's played with a bamboo mallet.
* mallet: a hammer with a large wooden head, 채

The kkwaenggwari player is the leader of the quartet.
* quartet: 4중주, 4중창

징(ching) is a larger gong played with a padded stick.
* padded: 속을 넣은, 안을 덧댄

The 장구 (janggu) is a double-sided drum.

It looks like an hourglass.
* hourglass: 모래시계

You use two different sticks in each hand to play it.

The 북 (buk) is another double-sided drum made of leather.

It makes the bass sound in samulnori.
* bass: 베이스

꽹과리, 징, 장구, and 북 each symbolize lightning, wind, rain, and clouds.

10/17 3D Graphics

I love wearing those funky glasses. It feels futuristic.

Computer generated imagery, or CGI, has innovated the movie industry.

There has been a boom in 3D films ever since the movie Avatar.
 ex> We've been seeing a boom in the number of foreigners.

Many movies are now released in 3D.
ex> I heard that the movie has been released in 3D.

Some are even shown in 4D now.

Technology has come a long way.

ex> Korea has come a long way when it comes to its GDP.

3D images now look more real.

People have to wear funky 3D glasses to enjoy these images.

3D TVs are getting more popular despite their expensive prices.

Korea's leading electronics companies like Samsung and LG are already selling their 3D TVs in massive numbers.

10/15 Moving

DIALOG>> I'm calling a door-to-door moving service.

I'm moving this weekend.

They do it for you. They even do the unpacking for you.


RESPONSE>> When did you last move? How did the moving go?

I moved into my new studio several months ago.
* move into: ~로 이사 들어가다.
cf> move out of: 이사 나가다.
ex> He moved into his parents' house again.
* studio:  a small flat/apartment with one main room for living and sleeping in and usually a kitchen and bathroom, 원룸

I called a door-to-door moving service.

ex> Be sure to pick the right door-to-door moving service.

The movers came early in the morning.
* mover: 이삿짐 직원, 인부

They first started to pack my belongings into containers.
ex> She packed my lunch in a paper bag.

They then loaded everything onto the moving truck.
ex> I loaded everything onto a tray.

When we got to my new place, the movers unloaded everything from the truck.
ex> She unloaded her luggage from the car.

They unpacked every item from the boxes and put them in the right places.
ex> I unpacked my suitcases last night.

A lady even helped clean up.

ex> I need to clean up my room

Overall, the moving went smoothly, but it was quite an exhausting day.

TOPIC>> Talk about the benefits of biking.

Biking is becoming more and more popular these days.

There are bike-friendly places like parks you can bike in.

Thanks to bicycle-only lanes, some people take their bikes to work.
* bicycle-only lane: 자전거 전용 도로
* take one's bike to work: 자전거로 출근하다.
ex> Try to stay in the bicycle-only lanes.
ex> They take their bikes to work except on rainy days.

This is a great way to get a workout before you start your day.

There are also environmental benefits.

Bicycling regularly is a great way to stay healthy.
ex> Eat a lot of vegetables to stay healthy.

It will get your heart pumping and your blood circulation will improve.

10/13 Local Specialties

You will see many eateries in Korea that are named after local specialties.
* eatery: a restaurant or other place that serves food

ex> Those streets are names after former presidents.

Anmyeon-do's prawns are very delicious, especially when they are in season.
* prawn: 왕새우

Ulleung-do has the best squid.
* have the best something: ~이 최고다.

Youngduk is known for its snow crabs.

Younggwang is well-known for gool-bi, which is dried yellow corvina.

10/12 Doenjang

DIALOG>> Doenjang chigae is a very common Korean stew.

It smells nice in here.

It's a very common stew in Korea.

It is thicker than miso soup.

The base for the broth is a soybean paste called doenjang.
* base: 기본 원료, 맛을 내는 기본 성분.
* broth: thick soup made by boiling meat or fish and vegetables in water
ex> Doenjang is used as the base for the broth.


RESPONSE>> Talk about how doenjang is made and used.

Doenjang is fermented soybean paste.
ex> Alcohol is made from fermented ingredients.
ex> Kimchi is healthy, fermented dish.

Doenjang is also used as a dipping sauce.
ex> I like to have veggies with ranch dipping sauce.

People used to make doenjang at home.
ex> I know how to make beer at home.

The first step is to boil soybeans and grind them in a mortar.
* grind: 갈다, 빻다. 빻은 가루
* mortar: a mixture of sand, water, lime and cement used in building for holding bricks and stones together, 맷돌, 절구, 분쇄기

The grinds are made into bricks called mae-joo.
* brick: 벽돌

The bricks are then dried in the open air and sun.
* in the open air: 야외에서
ex> The meat tastes better cooked in the open air.

After that, they are stored in clay jars.
ex> My old clothes are stored in boxes.

Here the mae-joo is fermented more in brine.
* brine [bráin]: very salty water, used especially for preserving food

In the end, the liquid becomes soy sauce while the solid part becomes doenjang.

10/11 Rice Porridge

* rice porridge:  type of soft thick white food made by boiling oats in milk or water, eaten hot, especially for breakfast

We have rice porridge when our stomach is upset.
ex> He had an upset stomach for days.

It's easy on your stomach.  위에 부담이 가지 않는다.

I think I've seen restaurants that specialize in rice porridge.

We eat rice porridge or jook when we're sick or have stomach problems.
ex> I have stomach problems when I drink milk.

Korean rice porridge is hot and mashed up, so it's easy on the stomach.
* mashed up: 으깨진
ex> He is easy on the eyes.
ex> Be easy on him. 살살해.. Don't be too hard on him.

Many people have it as a regular meal.

This is why there are many jook chains in Korea.
ex> I don't like those big coffee shop chains.

Ho-bak-jook is made from pumpkin and glutinous rice.
* pumpkin: 호박 cf> zucchini: 애호박
* glutinous rice: sticky rice

Pat-jook is flavored with sweet red beans.
ex> This candy is flavored with various fruits.
