12/1 King Sejong the Great

DIALOG>> King Sejong the Great was a great leader.

He was one of the greatest leaders in Korean history.

He also oversaw a lot of scientific inventions.
* oversee: 관장하다, 감독하다.
ex> The agency oversees the trading of stocks.

He was responsible for expanding Korea's territory as well.

You can see his picture on the 10,000 won banknote.


RESPONSE>> Talk about the achievements of King Sejong the Great.

He ruled during the Chosun Dynasty from 1418 to 1450.
ex> A long time ago, dinosaurs ruled the earth.

King Sejong's greatest achievement was the creation of the Korean alphabet, Hangeul.
* achievement: a thing that sb has done successfully, especially using their own effort and skill
ex> She got a promotion in recognition of her achievement.

King Sejong also sponsored the inventions of the rain gauge, sundial, water clock, and the armillary sphere.
* sundial: a device used outdoors, especially in the past, for telling the time when the sun is shining.
* armillary sphere: 혼천의(천체 위치 측정 장치)

There is a statue of King Sejong on a boulevard called Sejongno in downtown Seoul.
* boulevard [búləvɑ̀ːrd]: 대로, 큰길
* statue [stǽtʃuː]a figure of a person or an animal in stone, metal, etc.
ex> I got shocked, and stood there like a statue.

There is even a city that was named after him called Sejong City.
ex> There is a building that was named after him.

His portrait is on the 10,000 won bill along with one of his inventions, the armillary sphere.
* portrait: a painting, drawing or photograph of a person, especially of the head and shoulders
ex> That life-size portrait looks real.
