12/19 School Bullying

DIALOG>> I used to be bullied as a kid.

Did the bullies just tease you or did they beat you up?

I really had a hard time.

Some victims have even committed suicide.


TOPIC>> Talk about the problems of bullying at schools.

School bullying can have a serous effect on children.
* school bullying: 학내 괴롭힘
* have a serious effect on: ~에 심각한 영향을 미치다.
ex> Lying can have a serious effect on your personal relationships.

Bullying can start with teasing, but it can easily lead to physical violence or severe harassment.
* tease: 놀리다.
* severe harassment: 심한 학대
cf> 성추행: sexual harassment
ex> Drinking and driving can easily lead to fatal accidents.

These days, as kids have become more tech-savvy, school bullying isn't limited to the school grounds.
* tech-savvy: 기술적 지식이 있는
* school ground: 학내 교정
ex> Your choice aren't limited to those on the list.

Some students receive mean texts or emails outside of school as well.
* mean: 심술궂은, 못된

They become what we call wang-dda in Korean, which means "Ostracized King or Queen."
* ostracize: expel from a community or group, 배척하다

Bullying can be incredibly traumatic for the victims.
ex> That was a traumatic incident for me.

Many develop insecurities and have low self-esteem
* insecurity: 불안감
ex> He was teased a lot as a kid and has low self-esteem.

Some victims take their own lives.
ex> Unfortunately, the actress ended up taking her own life.

Schools have to take bullying very seriously and take appropriate action.
* take appropriate action: 적절한 조치를 취하다.


@ I used to get picked on when I was young.  난 어렸을 때 괴롭힘을 당하곤 했어.

1.  Pulling all-nighters frequently could have a serious effect on one's health.
2. Secondhand smoking can easily lead to lung cancer.
3. It seems that he has low self-esteem.
4. There are too many people who take their own lives in Korea.
