3/2 High School Days

Describe how your high school days were.

My high school days were endless hours of studying. I had to prepare for the college entrance exam. I got to school by seven thirty and got ready for classes. Classes went on until four o'clock. After regular classes, we took extra classes until dinner. After dinner, some students went to cram schools while others stuck around for study-hall sessions. I typically left school around ten at night. I sometimes went to a private library after that, especially in my senior year. Looking back, high school was one of the toughest periods of my life.

I had to study tons of subjects for college entrance back in high school.

My GPA was very important, so I had to take my mid-terms and finals well.

* GPA (=Grade Point Average): 평점, 내신성적

* take one’s mid-terms and finals: 중간고사와 기말고사를 치르다

ex> I had to take my mid-terms and finals every semester.

I had to prepare for the Korean SAT and essay tests.

ex> I spent a lot of time on preparing for the exam.

I remember studying day and night because I had so much to study.

ex> I had to study day and night to get the scholarship.

My senior year was especially tough.

* tough: 힘든, 어려운

ex> I think my adolescence period was really tough.

I had classes all day from early morning, and then, I had to study more late into the night.

I was very relieved when I finished high school and got into college.

* be relieved: 마음이 놓이다, 안도하다 = be a relief

ex> I am so relieved to see you finally.

ex> It was a relief to finally hear from you.

Dialog>> High school was tough.

A: How were your high school days?
B: Oh, high school was tough.
A: Did you have to study a lot for college?
B: Yeah, I stayed in school for more than 12 hours a day.
A: What? That’s crazy!
B: I know. I don’t think I would be able to do it again.

We normally arrived at school by seven thirty and got ready for class.
* get ready for: ~을 준비하다

Classes went on after lunch until around four o’clock.

After our regular classes, we took make-up classes until dinner.

After dinner, some students went to cram schools for extra classes while others stuck around for study-hall sessions.
