PE 1/1 New Year’s Resolutions

I have a bad headache, as usual. But no more. I’m turning over a new leaf. This year I will treat my body like a temple.

* turn over a new leaf: to start fresh; adopt a good habit or rid oneself of a bad habit

ex> The criminal promises the judge he would turn over a new leaf if he got a second chance.

People tend to go hog wild with the promises they make to themselves and their loved ones on New Year’s Eve.

* go hog wild: to be unrestrained; let loose

ex> During recess, my friends and I would go hog wild and burn off all of that extra energy.

What made you say something as asinine as that?

* asinine  [^|ӕsɪnaɪn]: ridiculous; absurd

ex> The radio talk show host’s comments were asinine at best and offensive at worst.

I was talking to a really gorgeous yoga instructor and I guess I got carried away.

* be/get carried away: to lose self-control

= lose control; go too far; get overly excited

ex> Try not to get carried away when you meet my friend, who happens to be a movie star.

The worst promise I ever made on New Year’s was to take my next relationship slow, because I always used to jump into things too quickly.

* jump into sth: to act without thinking something through

ex> Don’t just jump into a new job just because they offer it to you.

1/2 What are your New Year’s Resolutions?

I want to make some big changes in my life this year.

ex> You need to make some big change if you really want to be successful.

First and foremost, I want to take care of my health a little better.

* first and foremost: 가장 먼저, 우선

* take care of one’s health: 건강을 돌보다

ex> You need to take care of your health better than now.

ex> Let me take care of this problem.

I am planning on eating properly and working out on a regular basis.

* working out: 운동하다

I want to invest more time in building my career.

* build one’s career: 경력을 쌓다

I’m planning on listening to EBS radio programs every day to brush up on my English as well.

* brush up on: ~을 복습하다, 실력을 가다듬다

ex> I need to brush up on my interview skills.

I want to become a more organized person by planning ahead more thoroughly.

* organized person: 체계적인 사람, 짜임새 있는 사람

ex> I’ve never met such an organized person like him.

Last but not least, I plan to check up on my parents more often this year.

* last but not least: 마지막으로

* check up on: ~의 안부를 확인하다

ex> I often check up on my mother by calling her.

@ I’m going to sign up at a gym.

* stamp out: to destroy or get rid of something bad or unpleasant by force or with a lot of effort  ex> They aim to stamp out drug dealing in schools.
to put out a fire by pressing down on it hard with your foot.  ex> He stamped out the flames before they spread any further.

* resolve to do something: to make a firm decision to do it, determined to do it
ex> Barnes was resolved to moving on when his contract expired.

* kick the habit: stop doing something harmful that you have done for a long time.
ex> You ought to kick the habit before you get addicted.

1. The new mayor wants to stamp out poverty in the city.
2. They are paid miserably low wages.
3. When it comes to cooking, my mom is the best cook.
4. Please tune in to our show tomorrow morning.


@ I have some the New Year's resolutions for me. The first thing is that; regular workout. I  have been playing badminton near sport center. I couldn't take part in doing regularly last year because my kids didn't want me to go out for workout. I have to negotiate with 윤서 that I can go three time a week; and play with them in other days.
When it comes to English studying, I stick to tune in to EBS FM during commuting.
