PE 9/5 An Old Flame


* play something down: to make something seem less important than it is
ex> Norma plays down her discovery’s impact on the medical world.

* old flame: a former romantic partner
ex> An old flame has sent me a friend request.
ex> Charles met up with an old flame at his high school reunion.

* fast friends: good, loyal friends
ex> Dave and Rob were fast friends in high school.

* one thing led to another: an unplanned event or activity resulted from a planned one
ex> It began as a repair, but one thing led to another and we replaced the whole kitchen.

* on-again, off-again relationship: a romantic relationship that stops and restarts a few times
ex> Do you think an on-again, off-again relationship can ever succeed?

* fifth wheel: an extra, unnecessary person or thing in a group
ex> As those two became friendlier, I began to feel like a fifth wheel.
Note> People also use the term, “third wheel” which basically means the same thing.
