Raising pets can cost quite a lot of money. Therefore, when the economy goes bad, some pet owners cannot afford to keep their pets
anymore.

It was
estimated that there were more than 25,000 homeless pets in Korea as of
2013.

Most local districts run animal shelters. But they do not have
enough room or funds to take care of
all the homeless animals.

Many places have no choice but to put them to sleep.

More recently, the public has become more aware of these animals
thanks to campaigns held by animal rights
groups.
There have been calls to adopt pets from animal shelters. Pet owners have also been urged to become more responsible with their pets.
