PE 4/8 Al Gore’s Speech – Part 2

So why is this election so close? I believe this election is so close today mainly because the forces of the status quo are desperately afraid of the change Barack Obama represents.
* close: almost even; having a narrow difference
ex> The referee made a close call that could have gone either way.
ex> We’re probably going to win the game, but it’s going to be close.
* status quo: the existing condition or state of affairs
ex> Most older people prefer to maintain the status quo when it comes to their quality of life.

Oil company profits have soared to record levels, gasoline prices have gone through the roof and we are more dependent than ever on dirty and dangerous fossil fuels.
* go through the roof: to increase very rapidly, such as in prices
= skyrocketed; hit the roof; dramatically increased
ex> After the company reported higher sales for the quarter, the stock price went through the roof.
cf> She went through the roof when she heard she’d been fired from the radio program.  (to lose one’s temper, become very angry)

Military experts warn us our national security is threatened by massive waves of climate refugees destabilizing countries around the world, and scientists tell us the very web of life is endangered by unprecedented extinctions.
* web of life: the way that all living things are connected; the ecology of the Earth
ex> You can’t cut down a forest without affecting the entire web of life.
* unprecedented: unknown, new, unheard of
ex> Because of climate change, an unprecedented number of typhoons are hitting every year.
