PE 6/29 The Case of the Missing Red Bag

* freak out: to be in or to cause a heightened emotional state
ex> My mom freaks out whenever I store my biology projects in the fridge.
Note> This phrase means to lose your “normal” usual self and go crazy, either due to extreme fear, anger or excitement.

* pitfall: a hidden danger or problem
ex> There are many pitfalls to trying to learn a new sport by yourself.
Note> Literally, this is a pit flimsily covered or camouflaged and used to capture and hold animals or men.

* fresh pair of eyes: an additional person who examines or investigates something
ex> Bringing in a fresh pair of eyes helped us to identify problems in our systems.

* on the same page: in agreement
ex> The meeting went smoothly because all of the department heads were on the same page about the new policy.

* out of the corner of one’s eye: to see something indirectly or peripherally
ex> I thought I saw a new flower shop out of the corner of my eye as I rode down our street this morning.

* notorious: famous for a bad quality or deed
ex> The movie is about a notorious gangster who becomes a kindergarten teacher.

* hold out: To “hold out” has a few other meanings. One of the most common ones relates to a supply of something lasting before running out, such as, “We’ve invited twenty kids to the party, so we hope the ice cream will hold out.”
ex> Did you ask your mom for a higher allowance like you were going to?
I did, but she’s holding out on me until I improve my grades.
