PE 6/25 Inside Hungary’s Remarkable Baradla Cave

* not playing with a full deck: slightly illogical, unpredictable, or crazy
ex> The other faculty members thought I wasn’t playing with a full deck until research proved that my theory was correct.
Note> This also means (as a metaphor) that you are at a disadvantage, because you do not have all the resources available.

* best bet: an ideal or preferable option
ex> That coffee shop is always crowded, so maybe this one is our best bet.

* nippy: (of weather) moderately cold; (of an animal) likely to bite people lightly
ex> My mom says that it’s still a little nippy in the morning where she lives.
Note> This also means biting, sharp, pungent (of the taste of food such as “nippy cheese”).

* dead of winter: the coldest time in the middle of winter
ex> The family ran out of firewood during the dead of winter, and had to borrow some from their neighbors.

* cumulative: increasing in quantity by increments
ex> Repeated exposure to radiation can have a cumulative effect in the body.

* lag behind: to fail to maintain a necessary pace
ex> I started a study group to help those who are lagging behind in this course.
ex> We keep our products up to date so our sales don’t lag behind.

* long: This word is more commonly used as an adjective to describe physical length or a duration of time. As a verb, it has a poetic, emotional quality. You might say that you long to meet your hero in person, but I would be strange to say that you long for the photocopier repairman to show up.
ex> My father longs to visit his homeland again before he’s too old to travel.
