There are many family-oriented customs for family holidays in Korea.

First, relatives all get together at one place.
There are traditional memorials that are carried out to remember ancestors.

People prepare food and bow to the
picture of their ancestors.
This ritual is called charae and it has been going on for a long, long time.
People also visit their ancestors’
graves to pay their respects.

On New Year’s Day, children perform formal bows to their parents
and the elders in the family.
ex> I used to perform formal bows
to my grandparents as a kid.
Young children get money gifts from the elders when they do this.
