1/31 Talk about Korean family holiday customs

There are many family-oriented customs for family holidays in Korea.
* family-oriented: 가족 중심의
ex> People used to be more family-oriented in the past.

First, relatives all get together at one place.

There are traditional memorials that are carried out to remember ancestors.
* traditional memorials: 전통의식
ex> I prepared food for my grandmother’s traditional memorial.

People prepare food and bow to the picture of their ancestors.

This ritual is called charae and it has been going on for a long, long time.

People also visit their ancestors’ graves to pay their respects.
ex> I would like to pay my respects to your efforts.

On New Year’s Day, children perform formal bows to their parents and the elders in the family.
ex> I used to perform formal bows to my grandparents as a kid.

Young children get money gifts from the elders when they do this.
* get money gifts: 용돈을 받다
ex> I looked forward to getting money gifts from my relatives.

@ Korea has a rich culture한국의 문화는 상당히 다채롭다.
