When Western missionaries came to Korea in the 19th centruy, they were fascinated by the drumming sound that echoed through the evening.

In the old days, Koreans used to smooth out their clothes by beating them with sticks.

Here is how it works. A piece of wrinkled garment is placed on a block of stone called dadeumi-dol.

This stone is usually made of marble or granite.

Then two people pound the clothes with the sticks called pangmangi until they are perfectly smooth.
