PE 10/4 Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon is the most famous estate in America. This was the home of George Washington, the first President of the United States.

Is it true that many of the founding fathers of the U.S, including Washington, owned slaves?
* founding father: 창시자, 미국 헌법 제정자

Yes. After we tour the 21 bedroom mansion, where he lived high on the hog, we'll tour the slaves' cabins. Washington owned 50 slaves, which was a sign of great wealth. In fact, compared to all of the U.S. presidents, Washington had the lion's share of the wealth.
* live high on the hog: 호화롭게 (사치스럽게) 살다
ex> We got into debt because we were living high on the hog.
* the lion's share: 제일 좋은 몫, 알짜
ex> The CEO takes the lion's share of the profit.

Wow! Look at this view from the porch. The Potomac River is astoundingly beautiful. How many acres did he own?

The original plantation was 50 acres. Today, there is a four acre demonstration farm where you'll be able to see how the original farm functioned in your mind's eye.
* plantation: 농장
* in one's mind's eye: 머릿속으로, 상상으로
ex> In my mind's eye, I had imagined that his marriage proposal would be more romantic.
