PE 10/1 Enjoying and Helping Greece


* just shy of: a little less than
ex> We picked just shy of three bushels of apples from that tree this year.
ex> Sharon was offered a salary just shy of what she’s making now, but with more vacation time.

* house of cards: a fragile structure in danger of collapsing
ex> If we don’t improve our internal communications, this whole company could come down like a house of cards.

* horde: a large group of people
ex> A horde of angry civilians forced the military guardsmen to change their strategy.
Note> This word is often confused with the word hoard which has the same pronunciation. The noun hoard refers a supply of something that has been stored up and often hidden away.

* it couldn’t hurt: the result will be positive or neutral
ex> I don’t know if taking a nap will cure your headache, but it couldn’t hurt.

* pull one’s own weight: to perform one’s portion of a shared task
ex> Do you find it hard to get your teenagers to pull their own weight around the house?
ex> Social psychologists have identified ways in which society members only pretend to pull their own weight.

* start from scratch: to begin again
ex> I accidentally put salt instead of sugar into the batter, so I had to start from scratch.

* rosy: 희망적인, 유망한
The word rosy also means “pink in color,” like a rose flower. Someone might say that their cheeks are rosy, meaning “pink” – or that their future is rosy, meaning “likely to be successful.”

ex> She did say that I’ll have a rosy future if I don’t make any major changes before next summer.
