PE 10/7 Helping Nancy Get an Honest Deal

* bum: to borrow; receive without giving compensation (informal)
ex> I’ll bet you anything that Lance will try to bum a cigarette from me.
ex> Could I bum some money from you to buy a sandwich?
Note> As a noun, this word is also slang for a homeless person or your butt! So make sure you know the exact context of this word when used.

* stick out of: to protrude; be partly visible
ex> Is that a shark fin I can see sticking out of the water over there?

* oldest trick in the book: a method of deception that has been used for a long time
ex> That pickpocket used the oldest trick in the book to distract me.

* dawn on one: to cause a sudden realization
ex> It finally dawned on Kevin that I wanted to date him.
ex> When did it dawn on you that you left the car downtown?

* do a one-eighty: to change one’s opinion to the opposite; turn around
ex> Lawrence did a one-eighty on his strategy when he saw the sales figures.
Note> A 180 means a half-completion of that condition which essentially means you’re going in a different direction or taking a new path. 360 or full circle takes you right back where you started.

* back to square one: at the very beginning again
ex> Our team’s proposal was rejected, so it looks like we’re back to square one.

* negotiate: 협상하다, 교섭하다
The verb negotiate can also mean to find a route through physical obstacles. For example, you could say, “We had to negotiate our way around some huge holes in the road.”
ex> He started hiring someone to negotiate his salary for him when I was about ten.
