10/1 Armed Forces Day

When I was a kid, I loved seeing the Korean national flag, or Taegukgi, as we call it, being flown at almost every house on national holidays.
* be flown: (깃발이) 펄럭이다, 휘날리다

Today is the day we proudly hang the Taegukgi.
* hang: 걸다, 달다, = put it out
ex> His life was hanging by a thread.
cf> hang in (there): 버티다, 견디다.  ex> I'm just hanging in there.  그럭저럭 버티고 있어

What's the occasion?
* occasion: 행사, 경우, 기회
ex> He only drinks on special occasions.

Prior to 1956, the Korean army, nay and air force each celebrated their own anniversaries.
* prior to: ~에 앞서, ~보다 전에
ex> Prior to his retirement, he had won ten major tournaments.

The Korean government designated October 1st Armed Forces Day.
* designate: 지정하다, 지명하다

South Korean forces broke through the 38th parallel for the first time during the Korean War.
ex> For the first time in her life, she was able to hear.
* break through: 돌파하다, 뚫다, 극복하다


@ You get too emotional sometimes.  넌 가끔 너무 감성적인 것 같아.
