PE 9/15 Coming Back from Vacation

Vivien! What on earth happened to you?
* What on earth…?: a way of expressing surprise when asking why or what

Tell me exactly what happened. Give me the play-by-play.
* play-by-play: a very detailed description of an event
ex> The sports commentators gave a play-by-play analysis of the soccer game.

That was a really stupid move! He could’ve killed somebody and himself.
* (Adj.+) move: a critique of something one did
ex> The gymnast’s front handspring off the pommel horse was a really good move.
ex> When the teenager tripped and fell in front of the pretty girls, his friends shouted, “Smooth move, Mikey!”

Wow, that was really big of you. There isn’t a chance in hell I would’ve done the same.
* big of someone: to do something honorable or extraordinarily kind
ex> It was really big of the wrongly-convicted man to forgive the family of the victim when he was found innocent.
* not a chance in hell: unlikely; nearly impossible
ex> We don’t have a chance in hell of catching up to the rest of the cyclists now!
ex> You think you can run faster than me? Not a chance in hell!
Note> Some variations of this expression are “no chance in hell,” or “a snowball’s chance in hell.”
