Legendary American football coach Vince Lombardi shared these words of wisdom about winning. Almost 50 years later, they are still relevant.
Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an
all the time thing. You don’t win once
in a while; you don’t do things right once in a while; you do them right
all the time.
* once in a while: occasionally; not
always; from time to time; at times
ex> Once in a while I like to
eat chocolate, but it isn't a serious craving for me.
Every time a football player goes to ply his trade he’s got to play from the ground up – from the soles of
his feet right up to his head.
* ply one’s trade: to do the job one is
trained to do
cf> ply (verb) = to use a tool, or to
do sth with skill
ex> Whether you ply your trade
behind a computer or on a farm, dedication is very important.
ex> The tailor delicately plied
his needle.
* from the ground up: from the basics
ex> If you want to learn a new skill,
you need to start from the ground up.
ex> Sorry, but you’ll have to start
all over again from the ground up.
But more importantly, you've got to play
with your heart, with every fiber of
your body.
* with every fiber of one’s body/being:
with complete conviction and belief
ex> Joe told his girlfriend that he “loved
her with every fiber of his being.”
If you’re lucky enough to find a guy
with a lot of head and a lot of heart, he’s never going to come off the field second.
* come off: to leave a place, usually
where there is an audience watching
ex> Carl came off the stage
with his head held high.
