PE 5/7 The Air Conditioning Is on Already?

Can’t they just turn it off? My desk is right under the air vent and I’m going to freeze my butt off in here.

You have got to be kidding me! I’m calling an HVAC specialist and ending this nonsense once and for all!
* once and for all: finally and definitely
ex> “Tell me once and for all who else robbed the bank with you,” the detective demanded.
ex> When cancer is cured once and for all, the pharmaceutical companies will go out of business.

Do you know what kind of trouble you can get in if you do that! Why don’t you run it by the manager first? You don’t want to step on anyone’s toes.
* step on someone’s toes: to offend or insult someone by surpassing their authority
ex> I was only trying to help, I didn't mean to step on your toes.

Yeah, I guess I should go through the proper channels, even if it means I have to wear a hat and gloves today.
* go through the proper channels: to approach a problem through the chain of command; start with the immediate responsible person and go up from there
ex> Without going through the proper channels, it is impossible to become an exporter.

In the meantime, you can sit at Barry’s desk. He’s away on a business trip until Monday.
* in the meantime: for now
ex> We’ll discuss the salary later, but in the meantime, let’s talk about your job description.

Thanks for talking me down, Travis. I was about to make a mistake that could have cost me big time.
* talk someone down: to prevent a person from doing something bad; calm a person by speaking with them
ex> The police talked the angry man down and got him to put down his gun.
