8/12 Divided Families Day

They have established this day to promote search campaigns for divided families.
* promote: 촉진하다, 홍보하다
ex> They are trying to promote using mugs instead of paper cups.

There has been virtually no contact between families who were divided during the war.
* virtually: 사실상, 거의
ex> Your proposal is virtually impossible.

Most of these families don't know the fate of their loved ones on the other side of the border.
* on the other side: 반대쪽에, 건너편에
ex> He lives on the other side of the town.

There have been a few rounds of reunions following the historic summit of 2000.
* round: 한 차례, 한 번
ex> Please give him a round of applause!

For many of the divided families, time is not on their side.
* not on one's side: ~의 편이 아닌
ex> Unfortunately, my boss is not on my side.

Many pass away before seeing their families again.
* pass away: 돌아가시다, 사망하다
ex> I didn't expect him to pass away so soon.

Today is Divided Families Day in Korea.
The central Federation of the Five Northern Korea Provinces has established this day to promote search campaigns for divided families.
Since the end of the Korean War, there has been virtually no contact between families who were divided during the war.
Most of these families don't know the fate of their loved ones on the other side of the border.
There have been a few rounds of reunions following the historic summit of 2000.
However, the number of families who had this opportunity was low.
For many of the divided families, time is not on their side, as many pass away before seeing their families again.
