8/15 Civil Defense Drill

Korea's national civil defense drill is regularly held throughout the year.
ex> regularly run around the park with my dog.
* civil defense drill: 민방위 훈련
* throughout the year: 일 년 내내

The purpose of the drill is to prepare and educate civilians in case of a national emergency.
* in case of: ~의 경우에, ~에 대비하여
ex> You need to wear your seat belt in case of an accident.

Originally, the focus was on the scenario of being attacked from the North.
* scenario: 시나리오, 각본
ex> That would be the worst case scenario.

The drill commences at 2 pm with a siren.
* commence: 시작하다, 시작되다
ex> The meal commences with a prayer of thanks.
ex> The meeting is scheduled to commence at 5 PM.

Participation is mandatory.
* mandatory:  의무적인
ex> Is it mandatory for students to attend?

Schools and business are suspended and people take shelter.
* suspend: 중단하다, 정직시키다, 연기하다
ex> Your son has been suspended from school.


You can never be too careful. 아무리 주의해도 지나치지 않아.

1. The doctor is worried he isn't regularly taking his medicine. 
2. Take this money in case of an emergency.
3. I can't imagine that scenario
4. I hate going to mandatory morning meetings.

But now different possibilities such as nuclear accidents, terrorism, and biochemical threats are considered.
The drill commences at 2 pm with a siren.
Participation is mandatory.
Traffic is halted and pedestrians gather at safety stations.
These include underground shelters, subway stops, and other facilities.
Schools and business are suspended and people take shelter.
The drill lasts around 20 minutes and ends with another siren.
