Talk about seodang.
Korean parents are well-known for their enthusiastic support for their children's education. That made me wonder, have they always been like that? So I did some research and I realized that it might have originated from seodang. Seodang was a private village school that provided elementary education during the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty. In the seodang, boys from 7 to 16 years old learned to read the Thousand Character Classic and acquired basic idea of Confucianism. Anyone could study at the seodang. Not only the yangban children, but commoners and even slaves were taught at these seodangs.
