8/19 Dangsan Tree

Ever since I was a kid, I've always believed that trees and plants have souls just like human beings.

That's why, up to this day, I don't pick flowers or cut tree branches.

I'm not the only one who believe that trees have souls.

Every farm village in the Korean countryside has one or two magnificent old trees.
* magnificent: 웅장한, 아름다운
ex> This villa offer a magnificent view of the beach.
ex> This is truly a magnificent car.
* countryside: 시골, 지방

Dangsan trees are believed to be one of the village's guardian deities.
* be believed to: ~라고 믿어지다, 여겨지다
ex> Smoking is believed to cause about 87 percent of lung cancers in the US.

Villagers would hold shamanistic rituals to honor Dangsan tree.

You might think I'm weird, but I'm not the only one who believe that trees have souls. Koreans have worshiped trees for thousands of years. Every farm village in the Korean countryside has one or two magnificent old trees called Dangsan Tree. According to Korean folk belief, Dangsan trees are believed to be one of the village's guardian deities. Villagers would hold shamanistic rituals to honor Dangsan tree. some of these trees are more than 1,000 years old!
