PE 7/10 Dublin: U2 Is Playing in a Bar Tonight!

I can’t believe we are actually in the Octagon! Words fail me! Did you know that this place is owned by Bono and the Edge?
* Words fail me!: to be speechless
= be speechless; be at a loss for words; don’t know what to say
ex> Words fail me at emotional times like this.

I know U2! The names just didn't ring a bell. Hey, isn't that Bono over there?
* ring a bell: to have a vague sense of familiarity
ex> The old man’s face didn't ring a bell, but it was her grandfather.

I’m not falling for that old trick! A minute ago you didn’t know him from Adam and now you’re spotting him in a crowded bar? I don’t think so.
* not know someone from Adam: to be completely unfamiliar with someone
ex> The man called me by name and was very friendly to me, but I didn’t know him from Adam.

No, really, I think it’s him. And he’s heading up to the stage! People are getting really excited.

If I turn around you’re going to laugh and say, “Made you look!” If I had a nickel for every time I used that joke on other people…
* if I had a nickel for every time…: a suggestion that something is a very common occurrence for oneself
ex> If I had a nickel for every time someone tried to sell me something over the phone, I’d be a millionaire.

I promise not to say a word. Just slowly turn around and try not to let your jaw drop to the floor.
* make/let one’s jaw drop: to shock or stun someone so much that his/her mouth hangs open
ex> The price of the luxury automobile made Ted’s jaw drop.
