I can’t believe you made me go on this
dumb ghost tour. You know I find that “paranormal” stuff to just be a bunch of malarkey.
* malarkey:
nonsense
ex> “Malarkey!” Tom shouted. “You
don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Note> Literally, this word means ill
ruled or badly behaved. “Mal” is from the French for ill, or sick, and “Arkey”
from the latin “Arche” meaning rule.
I think that’s stretching the truth a bit. That is, if you believe in ghosts,
which I don’t.
* stretch
the truth: to exaggerate; tell a small lie
ex> I may have stretched the truth
when I told you I used to be in a rock band. I was actually just a stagehand.
And then to the pitch-black graveyard at St. Patrick’s Cathedral to look for the
Lady in White, who haunts her cruel husband.
* pitch-black:
as dark as tar; completely without light
ex> The creepy house was pitch-black
inside, and looked even worse by the light of a candle.
Note> “Pitch” is a thick black sticky
substance used on roofs and ships to stop water getting through.
You even have goosebumps on your arm! I
knew I would get you in the right frame
of mind for the tour.
* the
right frame of mind: the proper attitude for doing something
ex> She wasn't in the right frame
of mind when the police interviewed her about the man who attacked her.
You aren't very funny, Rex. I’m just a bundle of nerves when I know I’m going to be startled at
any second.
* a
bundle of nerves: a person who is nervous, tense or worried
= a nervous wreck; a basket case; shaken
up
ex> I was a bundle of nerves
the first time I went out on stage to sing.
