We never ate anything fancy, but the portion sizes were reasonable and there
were rarely seconds – maybe for your
father, but not for you. And there was always a vegetable on the plate.
* portion
size: the amount of a type of food served per person
ex> My dad judges a restaurant on how
big their portion sizes are.
* seconds:
an extra helping of food
ex> The wedding cake was so good that
Tom went back for seconds.
For many folks, those nutritious family meals are a thing of the past, because a lot of people today are living in
communities without a single grocery store, so they have to take two, three
buses, a taxi, walk for miles just to buy a head of lettuce for a salad or to
get some fresh fruit for their kids.
* folks:
colloquial for people
ex> Tom thought that most folks
were good, so he treated everyone the same.
Note> This term can also refer to
someone’s parents.
ex> My folks just bought a new
house in the countryside.
* a
thing of the past: an occurrence that was once common but no longer happens
ex> The doctors thought polio was a
thing of the past until new cases appeared in Africa.
They wind up
grabbing fast food or something from the corner store or the mini-mart – places
that have few, if any, healthy options.
* wind
up: to become a certain way
ex> If you aren't careful about what
you eat, you’ll wind up obese and sick.
Note> “Wind up” also means to bring
to a finish.
ex> Let’s wind up the meeting
in a few minutes.
