In these kinds of strong African American
communities, we went to neighborhood schools around the corner. So many of us
had to walk to and from school every
day, rain or shine.
* go/walk
to and from: to go to one place and then return to where you started from
ex> Many women in Africa have to go
to and from the village well to get water several times a day.
* (come)
rain or shine: no matter what the weather is like, something will happen
ex> NASA planned to launch their
newest satellite, come rain or shine.
And in Chicago, where I was raised, we
did it in the dead of winter. No
shoes on our feet – it was hard, but we walked!
* the
dead of winter: during the coldest part of winter
ex> Even though it was the dead of
winter, the bakery opened at exactly 6 a.m.
And in school, we had recess twice a day
and gym class twice a week, like it or
not.
* like
it or not: without regard to how one feels about it
ex> “Like it or not, I’m going
to be your father for the rest of your life!”
We were constantly on the move,
only stopping to eat or what? When the streetlights came on, right?
* on
the move: in motion
= on the go; in transit; on the road
ex> The company president spent most
of his days on the move, visiting factories and sales offices.
