PE 7/22 Michelle Obama “Let’s Move” Speech – Part 4

And we’re working with doctors and pediatricians to ensure that they routinely screen our children for obesity. And I can personally attest to the value of these screenings based on my own personal experiences, because it wasn't that long ago when the Obamas weren't exactly eating as healthy as we should have been.
* ensure: to guarantee that something happens
ex> My parents both worked hard to ensure that my sister and I could go to university.
* screen: to do a test in search of a particular outcome
ex> Sonya went to the doctor’s office to get screened for cancer.
* attest to: to verify or confirm a claim
ex> She was willing to attest to the fact that the diet pills worked.
ex> Will you attest to the fact that you saw the man holding a gun?

And it was our daughters’ pediatrician who actually pulled us aside and suggested that I think about making some changes to our family’s diet. And it made a world of difference.
* pull someone aside: to speak to someone privately
ex> I pulled Jill aside to tell her that she had a big spot on the back of her dress.
* It made a world of difference: to have a positive effect on something
= made all the difference; made all the difference in the world; made a wealth of difference
ex> Your donation will make a world of difference to these starving children.

But we also know that giving better information to parents is not enough, because with 31 million American children participating in federal school meal programs, many of our kids are consuming as many as half their daily calories at school.
