PE 7/17 Dublin: Croke Park for a Hurling Match

Croke Park is packed on the gills today. I’m so happy our concierge could get us tickets to the match on short notice.
* packed to the gills: crowded to the point that one can barely move
= bursting at the seams; jam-packed; packed like sardines
ex> The subways in Tokyo are always packed to the gills, even on Sundays.
* on short notice: little time to accomplish something; at the last minute
ex> The doctor went to Mary’s house on short notice to deliver the baby.

That’s too bad. It’s so much more fast-paced than any of those games. And the fans are bouncing off the walls!
* bouncing off the walls: extremely excited about something
ex> We were bouncing off the walls when we got the news that Brad Pitt was filming his next movie in our town.

Did you see those two players almost collide! That was a close shave. Thank god they had helmets on.
* a close shave: a situation that almost results in an accident
ex> The two airplanes had a close shave on the runway.

Yeah, but they don’t have any other pads. Even the goalie seems unprotected standing there in the line of fire.
* in the line of fire: the focus of negative attention; the recipient of criticism or blame
ex> The alleged murderer’s family was in the line of fire during the two-month trial.
