Young Women Might Benefit From Mammograms

Young Women Might Benefit From Mammograms

 (Part 1)
A study released overnight that finds women who do not get mammograms make up a significant portion of breast cancer deaths. This includes younger women who follow the current government guidelines, which do not recommend routine testing before the age of 50. // ABC’s Chief Health and Medical Editor, Dr. Richard Besser is here with much more on this. So, let's dive into the study. What exactly does it say?
Well, this is gonna fuel the controversy. It’s a study out of Harvard. They looked at women who were diagnosed with breast cancer in the 1990s and then died from breast cancer. There were 609 of those women. 71% had never had a screening mammogram. // And half of those women were under 50. So, they’re saying, if those women had been screened earlier, it would have been detected earlier, and lives would’ve been saved.

(Part 2)
Well, I spoke to the woman who led that panel. And she said this isn’t going to change anything because, the question is, if you’d screened those women younger, would it have saved their lives? Young women tend to have more aggressive breast cancer. // And so, would the early screening have changed the outcome for them? And how many women would you have to screen to save one life? That’s the big question.
What is the downside? Is there any downside to screening early?
Well, the concern is, early screening, you’re gonna detect a lot of tumors that would’ve caused no problem. You’re gonna have to put women through treatment and biopsies they didn't need. The feeling by many is it's a personal decision that should be covered by insurance. // What is your recommendation, then? // That’s what I say. If you're under 50, think about your family history, check and make sure it’s covered, and then decide which way you want to go.
