5/6 Talk about Buddha’s Birthday in Korea.

Korea’s state religion used to be Buddhism a long time ago. Today, many Koreans still identify themselves as Buddhists.

The biggest celebration in Buddhism is Buddha’s Birthday. It is the equivalent to Christmas for Christians.

Buddha’s Birthday is April 8^th on the lunar calendar, so the date changes on the Western calendar every year. This year, it falls on May 6^th.

Main streets are decorated with colorful lotus lanterns weeks prior to this day.

There are large street parades that take place as well. It’s a very amusing sight for tourists.

Buddhist temples offer special services and provide meals to visitors on this day.
