5/6 Talk about Buddha’s Birthday in Korea.

Korea’s state religion used to be Buddhism a long time ago. Today, many Koreans still identify themselves as Buddhists.

The biggest celebration in Buddhism is Buddha’s Birthday. It is the equivalent to Christmas for Christians.

Buddha’s Birthday is April 8th on the lunar calendar, so the date changes on the Western calendar every year. This year, it falls on May 6th.

ex> Chuseok is August 15th on the lunar calendar.
ex> Some holidays in Korea are based on the lunar calendar.
* fall on: (날짜)~에 해당하다
ex> My birthday falls on a Saturday this year.
ex> The national holiday falls on a Sunday this year.

Main streets are decorated with colorful lotus lanterns weeks prior to this day.

There are large street parades that take place as well. It’s a very amusing sight for tourists.
ex> University festivals usually take place in spring.

Buddhist temples offer special services and provide meals to visitors on this day.
