PE 5/6 Hillary Clinton Speech – Part 1

For many of us in this room today, that was a call to action that we have heeded.
* a call to action: a suggestion to do something immediately
ex> The president issued a call to action for people to save energy during the summer months.

I know some of you have made it the cause of your life. You have worked tirelessly, day in and day out, to translate those words into realities. And we have seen the evidence of such efforts everywhere.
* day in and day out: each and every day, without fail
ex> In Tokyo, the subways are crowded day in and day out, no matter what.

In South Africa, women living in shanty towns came together to build housing development outside Cape Town all on their own, brick by brick.
* brick by brick: step by step; slowly and methodically
ex> This town was built on the backs of the factory workers, brick by brick.

In Liberia, a group of church women began a prayer movement to stop their country’s brutal civil war. It grew to include thousands of women who helped force the two sides to negotiate a peace agreement.
* negotiate: to come to an agreement through dialogue and compromise
ex> Every year the tenant has to negotiate with his landlord for a new rental agreement.

In the United States, a young women had an idea for a website where anyone could help a small business on the other side of the world get off the ground.
* get off the ground: to make a start; get underway; launch
ex> We could barely get our business off the ground because of all the regulatory difficulties.
