I’m guessing it’s my least favorite day
of the year, based on the fact that you only wear overalls when you want to clean the house from top to bottom.
* (from) top to bottom: the entire area
ex> The F.B.I. searched the house from
top to bottom, but found nothing.
Hold
that thought for next year. Here’s your list and
here’s my list. I think I split the jobs up pretty fairly.
* hold that thought: to save one’s idea
for another time
ex> Hold that thought, here
comes the waiter to take our order.
ex> I have to take this phone call,
so please hold that thought for a minute.
And what will you be doing while I’m slaving away in the attic and risking life and limb on the ladder?
* slave away: to work very hard at
something
ex> My dad slaved away at his
job for 27 years, only to be laid off without a pension.
* risk life and limb: to put oneself in
danger of serious physical injury
ex> Some people risk life and limb
doing extreme sports like skydiving
I got up at the crack of dawn and finished most of my list already. I have a
lunch date with Shirley, but when I come back I still have to change the sheets
and curtains. Have fun!
* at the crack of dawn: as the sun is
rising
ex> The newspaper always arrives at
the crack of dawn, even on Sundays.
